What Gear do I Really Need?
So you've looked at the REI gear list and wonder what do I really need?
I like to have a list that has too much and then I can not bring stuff instead of forget gear. Sorry, the list might have been too much information.
Here are my recommendations. Experienced campers sound off on what you think in the comments section.
Let me know if you are short gear I might have some extras.
Essentials:
Gear:
Deodorant (not spray kind)(think 12 year olds, matches and spray cans...)
Toothbrush & Toothpaste (and strict instructions before camp to use daily)
Simple Flashlight
Extra Batteries (preferably the kind that fits in your flashlight)
Sunblock (high SPF rating)
Lip Balm
Bug Repellent (we'll have it on all the time) (High DEET content)
Water Bottle (no sippy cups)
Sleeping Pad / Air Mattress (small ones not queen size)
1 Trash Bag (for dirty smelly clothes)
Small Pocket Knife
Prescription Medicine
Notebook, Pencil or Pen
Clothing:
Scout Shirt
Underwear
Change of Shoes or Boots
6 Pairs of socks
Long Pants
Shorts
PJs or sweats
Raingear (expect rain)
Coat or Jacket (it's at 8,000 ft - nights will be cold)
Swimming Suit (modest please)
Towel (smaller is fine)
Nice to Have (Optional):
Watch
Sunglasses
Cash for Scout Store
Hair Brush
Small First Aid Kit
Tent (let me know if you are bringing one)
Pillow (I highly recommend this luxury item)
Camp Chair (put your name on it)
Full Uniform (Pants or Shorts, Belt, Socks, Neckerchief, Slide)
Backpack
Water Sandals (for the pool)
Hat or Bandanna (sun protection)
BSA Activity Uniform (BSA T Shirts)
Portable Hand Sanitizer
Baby wipes (nice to get rid of grime)
Earplugs or Eyeshades if you use them.
Snack Food (don't store in tents)
Compass
Merit badge books
Don't Bring:
Jewelry
BB Guns or firearms
Large "rambo style" knifes
Fireworks
Pets
Cell Phones
IPODs, MP3 Players, Etc
Gaming Systems

Boys Attending Camp
Exciting news! We have had great response with the scout camp. We will have 14 boys attending. This will make a great camp and great memories. Here is some updated info on camp:
Some of the merit badges require online registration. I will do the registration for you, but if your scout wants to attend: Lifesaving, Swimming, Rifle Shooting, Shotgun, Snorkeling merit badges let me know and I'll get them registered. Some of these merit badges have fees. There are limited spots so let me know soon.
Finally, here is the info on the scout camp store from the camp directors:
The Camp Directors have gotten together and decided to go ahead and run the On-Line Camp Trading Posts throughout our camp season. How does this work? You will have until the Thursday Night (by 6:00pm) before you come to camp to make any purchases On-Line and still have your order ready for you on Monday morning--how convenient! That means you still have an opportunity to save up to 30% on selected merit badge supplies and other items offered.
PLEASE REMEMBER: We highly recommend that you do not shop at other camp's on-line stores because we do not offer shipping services and you would need to go to that camp to pick the items up.
Here are the links to each camp's webpage:

Swimming
The boys passed off their second class and first class swimming requirements tonight. This is not an easy requirement. It involves rescue, long swims, diving for heavy bricks and survival skills. The boys had to jump in the water fully clothed and then take off their clothing down to the swim suit and then tie knots in the clothing, inflate with water and use the clothing as a floation device. Have you ever tried to tread water, take off your pants and then tie them into knots? Very hard. Please tell your scouts how proud we are of their accomplishment. For some of them this was a relative first in the water so it was a lot of hard work and determination. The boys did fantastic.

Earn some money - mow someones lawn, pull weeds, sell lemonade, call up a rich relative in Nantucket and ask for sponsorship.
We will be attending camp Tifie this year. Early in the year we presented all the scout camp options and the boys overwhelmingly chose this camp. I met with the camp leaders and am very excited about this camp. They have developed an excellent program and have created a camp that balance fun and advancement.

You can expect to earn about 4-5 Merit Badges and have lots of fun. They have a COPE (Challenging Outdoor Physical Experience) course that will be lots of fun. They also have open shooting all week for shotgun, rifle and archery. Most camps we just get to shoot once during the week. Save up your money for ammo. Also they have an online trading post so you can plan merit badges before camp and purchase kits at a significant discount.
